About

Vocal freedom is our birthright. Unfortunately, unconscious habits often get in the way.

Many voice teachers are able to sense that students suffer from excess tension (tight jaw, stiff neck, locked ribs, etc.) However, other than bringing it to their attention, not all voice teachers are able to help students overcome these habits. The Alexander Technique is a wonderful tool by which a teacher can teach the students how to find balance and ease in his/her while body, thus allowing for the freedom to make a beautiful, unforced sound.

“The feeling that your tone is free, borne on its own wings of energy, is one of the greatest delights of life – because you are its creator.”
-Giovanni Battista Lamperti,
Dresden, 1890’s

Singing, Voice and the Alexander Technique

Like any other instrument, your voice is inevitably limited by the condition of the instrument that creates it: the BODY. Our work together is getting the body to a state in which it is capable, like any other instrument, of "being played". In other words, our work is to free the body of negative tensions which interfere with the functioning of a healthy instrument. Only after we have removed these tensions can we hear your true sound.

The voice is waiting to emerge. If we are not interfering with the natural processes of the body, we can experience the "flow" of singing (and speaking). We can discover a "singing reflex"- a synergy of muscles, breath and cords that comes with the impulse to sing. This can be discovered only if we are not interfering with the natural processes of the body.
